History of the club “Osijek – Žito”

Gymnastics appeared in Croatia and Osijek relatively early, but only as a form of body exercised performed by German and Austrian soldiers who were located in the military base in Osijek. Pervo Društvo Gombalacah was formed on 19th of August 1865 and is one of the oldest sports clubs in Croatia, alongside rifle clubs in Osijek and Zagreb.

The foundations for organizing the sport of gymnastics in the city of Osijek were laid on a large ceremony on the 2nd of September, where a “Request for approval of the rules of Pervoga Društva Gombalach” were sent. Today, we could call that the statue of the club.

After nearly 20 years of inactivity, and due to political circumstances of the time, the 6th of December 1896 shall remain remembered as the day when a Croatian first was formed, and the founders were dr. Ante Pinterović and Adam pl. Reisner. Those were the founding blocks of what is now the leading sports club in Osijek, “Gimnastičko društvo Osijek”.

Today, Gimnastičko društvo “Osijek-Žito” consists of experienced coaches and skilled gymnasts. This is result of a hard effort made by all team members and the conclusion asserts itself; the club has its history, its present and the way things are standing now, a very bright future in which it will shine and be recognized both domestically and internationally.
